Alan Summerly Cole [1846-1934] was the son of Sir Henry Cole, the first director of the South Kensington Museum, now the Victoria and Albert Museum. Cole attended the Government Design Schools at South Kensington. He was an expert in textiles, especially lace who wrote reports on the working conditions of lace makers in Britain. He was a friend of Whistler. This work was prompted by the interest in lace created by the International Exhibition of 1874. Examples of Spanish, Italian, French and Flemish lace are illustrated. These excellent photographs display the intricacy and delicacy of the lace designs.
