This sale was occasioned by the death of Baron Northwick, who was intestate. Many of the items were purchased by the 3rd Lord Northwick and taken to Northwick Park. Another purchaser was the book-collector, Thomas Phillipps, who wrote to his wife, "Poor Tippy ruined at the Northwick Sale !!! . . . Could not help it! Such beautiful Pictys". He later leased Thirlestaine House and filled it with his book collection.
