Portrait, maps, appendices, index; lxiii+415pp.
Fanny Kemble was the daughter of the actor manager Charles Kemble [1775-1854]. From her stage debut when 19, she became a great success, playing many roles. In later life she gave solo readings of Shakespeare's plays. In America she met and married Pierce Butler [1807-1867]. When she visited her husband's estates in Georgia, she realised the full extent of the horrors of slavery, which she abhorred. The journal she kept describing the system was only first published later in 1863.
