Circular turned wooden box with slightly domed lid
[RICHARD ALMACK AND JOHN MILTON]

A note inside the box is written in the hand of Richard Almack and signed with his initials and dated 31 July 1851, it reads: "Made from a Mulberry Tree in the garden of the Vicarage at Stowmarket said to have been planted by Milton. Given to me by Rev. A. Hollingsworth"

Richard Almack, Antiquary, lived at Long Melford, Suffolk. John Milton used to visit the vicarage at Stowmarket to see his friend Dr . Young, the incumbent. There is a long tradition that Milton planted one or more mulberry trees at the vicarage, which is now called Milton House.
