Pair of Watercolours, signed and dated 1804,
Joseph Powell was incorrectly given the Christian name John by Redford and his Royal Academy exhibits seem to have been recorded under that name. He will be remembered for his role in the founding of what is now the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. This society, founded first as the New Society of Painters in Watercolours, was set up in direct response to the considerable difficulty watercolourists were having in getting their works publicly exhibited. The New Society was formed in 1831, and it was Joseph Powell whom they elected as their first Chairman, and subsequently, the following year in 1832, as their first President. Lanercost is an Augustinian priory near Brampton east of Carlisle, close to Hadrian's Wall It was founded in the twelfth century but most of the building dates from the thirteenth. It is one of the best preserved Cumbrian monasteries despite being frequently attacked by the Scots. Joseph Powell is connected with a least one print of Lanercost Priory engraved by J. and H. S. Storer, published by Sherwood and Co, 1823.
