Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford of the Holy Roman Empire [1753-1814] natural philosopher and philanthropist, was born at North Woburn, Massachusetts. In the War of Independence, he remained loyal to the British and raised a regiment , the King's American Dragoons. In 1785, at the request of Elector Karl Theodor of Bavaria, he left England and settled in Munich. This volume of thirteen papers is dedicated to Elector Maximilian Joseph. The major part of the book are accounts of experiments on gun-powder and cannon, lifetime interests of Rumford. One paper is on the absorption of moisture in different clothing materials. The portrait is a stipple engraving, head and shoulders, to left, oval, in uniform, after Kellerhofen, by Joseph Rauschmayr. This engraving is not in the British Museum or NPG.
