As an undergraduate at Cambridge, he spent a term constructing a balloon, which was launched from the grounds of Jesus College. An experiment he repeated at Enontekio in Lapland. Clarke travelled widely: as far afield as Russia, the Levant and Egypt, and Scandinavia and St Kilda. He wrote from Constantinople in 1802, that he had seventy-six cases of antiquities and other specimens to send home.
