Jever is in Lower Saxony on the north German coast. Following the death of her father and brother she ruled Jever, and in 1531 expelled the East Frisians, who had invaded in 1527. For restoring the independence of the city, she, who remained unmarried, became a symbol of its identity and unoffically it is called 'Marienstadt'.
