William Mason [1724-1797] was Prebendary of York, poet and biographer of Gray. In 1775 Mason, wrote to Joshua Reynolds recommending Doughty as a pupil. Doughty was enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools and lived in Reynolds's house until 1778.
